Peter Danzey

Peter was no stranger to cancer, having beaten breast cancer in 2018, and skin cancer in 2022.In June this year, Peter was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, and after a short illness, he passed away peacefully with family by his side.Pete of course, was club secretary for Ebbsfleet Utd for 12yrs, from 2009 to 2021 working alongside managers including Liam Daish, Steve Brown, Jamie Day, Daryl McMahon, Gary Hill, Kevin Watson and Denis Kutrieb. His diligent service and loyalty to the Fleet was second-to-none throughout all that time, and since his retirement he was made honorary club secretary. As a player, Peter turned out over 800 times for his works side at Empire Paper Mills.A no-nonsense centre-half as he liked to describe himself, he played for 18yrs from 1960-78 and after hanging up his boots continued to serve as the clubs secretary until it was disbanded in 1996. His experience in football administration led him to join the Gravesham football league where he served as secretary and fixtures secretary, roles he held until it folded in 2012 after 108 years, overlapping with his position as Fleets secretary. He also managed the Gravesend football league side in its games against other local associations. In 2013, Peter was honoured by the FA for his half-century of service to the game, the most prestigious award the association gives out to its administrative officials. He recovered from a breast cancer diagnosis in 2018 and made headlines in local and non-league media as he raised awareness about the rare condition in men. He helped organise a McMillan coffee morning at Ebbsfleet Utd where he raised a substantial amount for the charity. Peter met his wife Mags at Empire Paper Mill, where they both worked, when he was 20 years old, and she was 15.They courted for 2 years before they married in 1968, on a Friday so Peter wouldnt miss his match on a Saturday!!They were married for a total of 55 years.Peter went on to work for Aylesford newsprint when Empire closed, then on to Ebbsfleet as club secretary, where he worked for 12 years.Peter loved the club dearly and had great respect for the owner Dr Abdulla for saving the club. Also, CEO Damien Irvine and Manager Dennis whom he spoke to very often. He had two children, John and Sarah, four grandchildren, Libby, Aimee, Charlotte, and Emma, and two great-grandchildren James and Joseph, whom he was very proud of. Peter was a large man with a large personality who has left a large hole in the lives of his loved ones. He would be so happy to be raising money and awareness for this charity and the wonderful nurses who were extremely dear to him. He will be missed enormously but his legend will live on!!
